For victory to be assured, you need the right weapons. For Karine Baillet, who has, among other things, a pair of legs, arms and eyes of steel. It’s her mind that makes the difference. Ready for all adventures, prepared for every ordeal and sensitive to all causes. Because conquest is a resolutely feminine noun, as the dictionary and Karine Baillet prove. And we’d be wrong to doubt it!
We all have images of the Raid Gauloises and other high-profile events in our heads, but more and more raids are being organized for “non-specialist” competitors (schoolchildren, students, companies, women, families…). They are organized in every region of France, Switzerland, Belgium and Canada, making them excellent promotional tools for tourists.
While there’s something for every taste and level, what never varies is the spirit that drives participants: conviviality, mutual aid, determination, adventure and endurance. World vice-champion in the discipline and organizer of the Le Touquet raid, Karine Baillet shares her experience of physical, mental, material and even financial preparation. Practitioners will find in this guide the advice and tips of an expert to enhance their performance.
As for beginners, they will discover all the facets of multi-sport raids, with their attractions, their variety and their constraints. All will recognize in Karine Baillet’s account the combined pleasures of sporting effort and communion with nature, in a spirit of adventure and respect.
Sebastien Sxay from Grenoble and Karine Baillet from Le Touquet win ahead of many men’s teams, the 1st mixed victory in the race! Karine reflects on the 5-day race!
From December 4 to 9, 2009, the Team Abudhabi Sport Council / Wilsa – AFG set off for Abudhabi for a 6-day race. The team comprised Karine Baillet (captain), Luc Beguin, Franck Salgues and Sébastien Sxay. The city of AbuDhabi, with its subtle blend of modern buildings and delicate minarets, and its waterfront, was again the setting this year for the first act of an epic 6-day race.
The packed program included kayaking, mountain biking, orienteering and ropes courses. The race covered a distance of 428km between dunes, turquoise lagoons, oases and desert: a change of scenery guaranteed! With its innovative concept of a long-distance race mixed with traditional bivouacs, it gives participants the chance to discover the astonishing culture of the emirate. The Abu Dhabi Adventure Challenge has received a very positive response from all four corners of the globe. For its third edition, a large number of renowned athletes, including Karine Baillet, were seduced by the concept and took part. No fewer than 20 nationalities will be represented among the 39 teams taking part.
Karine Baillet has made it! After 8 hours of effort this Sunday between Folkestone and Boulogne, Karine Baillet has reached her goal. To be the first woman to cross the English Channel on 3 different means of transport. After wakeboarding in 2006 and funboarding in 2007, it was in a kayak this time that the woman from Le Touquet conquered the Channel. 100 years after Louis Blériot, the raid champion paid tribute to her illustrious predecessor in her own way. Setting off from Folkestone at 12.39pm French time, Karine set off in fairly rough seas aboard her competition kayak. (Norte Top, 6.40m long and 46cm wide). Advancing at an average of around 6.25 km/h, with contrary currents and, at the end of the crossing, buoyant currents, Karine completed the 27500 nautical miles (around 50km) at around 8.45pm. A new line has been added to the list of achievements of the multiple adventure races champion….
